What is Kondapalli Bommalu?
Kondapalli Bommalu (కొండపల్లి బొమ్మలు) — also called chekka bommalu (చెక్క బొమ్మలు), Telugu for wooden dolls — are carved from the soft Tella Poniki (white sander) wood by artisan families in Kondapalli, Andhra Pradesh, and then painted by hand. The craft holds a Geographical Indication (GI) tag recognising it as originating from that region, and the same techniques are still worked by hand today.
